Bonus Arena - The Best of 'Ull comedy-

Hello and welcome back
This blog features
The Best of Ull comedy

After attending the opening night at Bonus Arena I attended the Best of 'Ull comedy night. Situated in the other part of the arena, we were running late and the weather was terrible I say that depending on your view after the heat we've had actually it wasn't cold it was just wet.
Anyway, the only downsides was no walk way from the adjoining car park to the venue doors and having to go outside for the box office. That's just a thing though really we all got wet and running late meant we had to head straight to the seats, it's just as impressive as the first time I was in there, steep though, no matter very very impressive. It meant everyone got a good view and thank god it was cool inside also.

Jed who I assume most of Hull knows fronts Hull Comedy Festival and is the face of Comedy for Hull hung out Monday at my place as I waned to get a feel for the vibe of his scene, career and I think it does you good to get to grass roots of anyone's passion, life and something they surround themselves with. I am surrounded by food and foodies so it's perfectly plausible to spend time with Jed to understand him.
Jed speaks what he sees so he's relatable and current, I'd say he appeals to everyone, every age, gender etc etc and I don't think he even needs to try to he just does. That's not just a comedy front it's the sign of a very likeable character that comes across on and off stage.
Opening up Jed made the audience laugh almost instantly, everyone cracked up which set us all up and actually makes you want to hear more from.

Steve Rimmer was the first act, I have seen Steve before which was when I first saw Jed. I can't lie I am not a fan, I don't like the jokes about Spring bank and I don't like the mock foreign accent. I think it's miss guided and mocking his act was the same as I saw him play way back. The fact the audience ( some not all) laughed was like the scenes at Black Panther when the tribes of Surma and Mursi tribes in Ethiopia where laughed at.
There's something quite dark and sinister about those jokes, laughs and misguided uneducated taunts. I just can't relate to, don't want to hear and I couldn't clap at the end of his stint.
Personally I think there is a time and a place, it wasn't either and although I am sure Steve didn't intend to come across like that I feel the people who found it funny are the very types who don't need to be encouraged. That being said there were parts that were funny, just a little less funny than I hoped for.

Onto Lois Mills, an act I have never heard of seen before and don't wish to again. I'm not sure if comedy is her strong point and acting should be her thing maybe neither should be as I am aware people go into character. I have no idea what she was trying to achieve with a log drawn out word, humming. The act didn't perform and I was bored, if I hadn't been given a press pass it would of resulted in me leaving the arena at that point.
Although I should add after a recent call I took a lot of people liked her, I guess it's just a difference in taste and humour, so with that in mind hats off to her.

After a short break and having a wonder in the interval we sat back down and I hoped for better, Jed introduced Jack Gleadow who I see spoken about on my social media. When people say they are not bragging, they are so what I am going to say is.  I see people talking about Jack, my Facebook friends list is extensive and varies it's around four thousand deep and you can't find it I hid it because I'm not into social climbing, not off me anyway!
Jack has a solid reputation, clean, vibrant and he's very popular. Although I hadn't seen him before I trusted my Facebook friends and was eager to see him perform.
Including the audience was a genius move and was hysterically funny those guys was brought up twice and twice made fun off, took it well and made Jacks' act stand out, highlight talent and most people wanted to see more and told me they'd venture to see him again. Huge praise from the near on eight hundred strong crowd with laughs about online dating, old school comedy and an interactive performance.

Both Garry Jennison and David Smith were good in equal measures, humourous and talented I think I'd have to see both again to be able to convey more of an opinion though so apologies to both acts on the few words said. Never the less I will make a concerted effort to do just that an see you both locally as soon as I can.
The main act, the draw of the night was Angelos Epithemiou, we all knew it and we all wanted to see him. I am defo a Shooting Stars girl, that show had me in tears.I even have the dvd box set I watched it when the original was on the t.v and eight of ten cats now. Angelos is good act, he's brutally funny, a great character and remenisant of good humour. Flicking the v's from a bag he had with him and genrally being ballsy (see what I did there?) if you was at the gig it's standard and you'll get the pun. If you wasn't there you should of been! Clearly I loved Angelos and Jack the most and I would liked Jed to of done his own set, I think Jed could pull off his won show there all by himself he's got game!
Great night, great venue perfect Friday night fodder!
