Hello and welcome back

So let me explain this latest blog
Why I wrote it, why this subject

I intended to get a ticket to this event, I saw it in a brochure set across the city
via
The Humber Mouth Literature Festival
I left it till the very last day
Yep I know what you are thinking, why the hell would I do that
Partly because I underestimated and because I was busy, really busy
Jerome Whittingham of Photmoments
To see more

Thankfully after talking to Dave Windass who is widely known throughout the city of Hull I got myself a seat
I can not begin to tell you how grateful I was and am for that thank you again Dave!!!

So I arrived, a little later than I hoped the room in Hull's central library was packed, rows upon rows of people chatting quietly away
There was a buzz, a hyper feeling of excitement
I did/don't know Akala at all but when I showed friends the gig I wanted to attend they all was saying how they wanted to go and how Akala is very talented, educated and interesting

For deatils on the Central library Hull for events and day to day
see more here

So I sat among the crowd
The mc came on and then introduced Akala
Of course I knew he had something to give, something to share and would truly educate me

After reading this
Founded in 2009 by BAFTA and MOBO award-winning hip-hop artist, writer, poet and historian AKALA is a label owner/social entrepreneur who fuses a unique sound with fierce lyrical storytelling. The Hip-Hop Shakespeare Company is a music theatre production company that explores the social, cultural and linguistic parallels between the works of William Shakespeare and that of modern day hip-hop artists
I just knew, I knew I would see and hear things I never knew about because let's be very honest here when did you ever see such an eloquent set of words jump of the screen and make you want to go see something?
Me neither...

Okay, okay I had a little crush mainly because clearly this guy is interesting, I was and am curious about him
A warm tone, gentle, open so upbeat and knowledgeable which is totally humbling by the way

This

I need to add that it is a 'refreshing to see a man of his depth to be such a a positive and influential gift

Of course a gift, teaching is maybe not the right word educating is too formal and straight laced
He talked to the crowd not at them, that is a factor you need to know

This
Firstly there was a great interaction
rap quotes or quotes of Shakespeare
A raise of hands for which it was, I was hesitant to raise my hand to some
Despite what you see of me, think of me and what the outer Sydell is I am shy I can be very private

However I joined in mostly and was happy to see I knew more than I thought

This old school

Then to learning some lines and reciting them back, which I stayed out of but did enjoy
The conversing of stage to audience was magical
Akala seemed to have us all in a grip, this young talented man had us all

Akala's website

It flooded into a Q&A many hands raised many points spoken all with beautifully answered replies
Given all the American "Trump gate" that did come up resoundingly Akala gave us an insight
It was fun, I wanted more so to learn, listen and become more of what he is and what he knows

Akala is a well rounded and open man with a lot to give
I hope he enjoyed Hull, I hope to see him again!

Hello and welcome back.

This weeks blog features

REDEYE FEENIX
A Hull based Musician ..
***So to the intro ***
Let's start with what I know about the album and Redeye's music.
I hadn't heard anything till this album.
Visually, the cover is expressive and dark.
Featuring Graffiti well known with Hull's scene.
For hire and viewings
See more via the facebook link below

***To the music***
The sound is deep in Hull's tone.
You'll know when you hear it, there's no confusion it runs through the album and plays well.
You'll see the streets in your mind if you close your eyes.

Take track six for example
It will make you think of Dre and Snoop in an old American car.
In a video from the early 90's hip hop/rap video cruising in the sunshine.Ain't nothing wrong with an old school track nor an old school trip.

Heavy deep beats, almost James Brown and Prince with a Jazz tone in track thirteen.
It's enough to make you get up, dust it off and dance.
I liked that one the most, it won't get old.
I need to add this to my mp3 player so it can be on repeat constantly.

I would love to Redeye do some work with
COUNTING COINS
with their Ska and trumpets it would be an insane mix.
It's just an idea though guys.

Each track is very different you'll hear a deep, velvet like woman's voice (track four)
Featuring Hull's very own Rebecca Robyns
Known for her music and beautifully shot photography.

I can say this, it's not what I was expecting.
It made me think of the early MTV that I watched and the De La Soul moments I had as a kid.
Take yourself on a trip to my childhood
De La Soul at their finest!

I am not saying the album sounds like them, I am saying that's the nostalgic feeling it gives me.
Then it got to track eleven and a sound of A tripe called quest vibe. It's taking me right back!
Here more here

Laid back, great tracks and that feeling you're hearing something that'll take you back and make you feel good.

I played it loud, my poor neighbours endured hours of me playing the album over and over.
I got a feeling, an emotion it's Hull the tracks are relevant, honest and on ground level.

I have seen Chappo time to time pop up, he's featuring on track seven.
Mad world is a honest realisation of the brutal truths of Hull and our cities, society and current raw feelings.
Well played guys, lyrically it's speaking out to a generations who need to know more.
***More on Chappo below**
CHAPPO
Had to add this just for the fun of it

I wanted to add these finally it's the feel I am getting from being a Hull girl through and through.
Knowing the city, the feel of the album you'll see what I am saying and hear the beauty they all make together.

Here we are at Thieving Harry's
Run and set up by two families this cafe is bringing you some of the best views and food delights in Hull.
Their hard work had paid off with what is now a Hull foodie staple.
Okay I admit it in my eyes anyway.

Harry's has a laid back set-up based in Hull on the marina a Humber Street corner no less!
Where we all enjoy the revels of Hulls festivals and sunny days.

Harry's started as a pop-up cafe three years on set roots so we could all get our fix of what's good for us on a more regular basis.

From their counter of cakes when you walk in (which entice you in) to coffee and San Pellegrino which a rare find in Hull and are a personal fave.
To the most amazing pancakes with bacon and syrup to burgers a with a house root slaw that just sounds amazing and toasted sandwiches with such things as screaming Harry's hot sauce nothing better than a hit kick.

Lucky enough to have two floors Harry's has space and lots of it,for dinning and relaxing alike nothing Harry's offers fails.

If you see someone in Harry's you know it was via word of mouth over how it takes you back to childhood and makes you feel right at home and I bet they are regulars. There is nothing pretentious about Harry's it's where the heart is it's down to earth with a little of a wonder to it.

Personally I love nothing more than biking there pulling up and dipping in to see what cakey heavens are on show.

Serving breakfast from the early hour of 8am right through to 4pm then coffee and cake still till closing at 6pm Wednesday to Sunday you'll have plenty of time and no excuses not to get there and eat drink and enjoy!

Harry's is the way forward you'll never not go back the staff the place the food are all perfectly matched you can sit and reminisce of festivals gone with the quirks and quivers of great times had!

Here are a few fave photos of mine of Harry's
Cheese n chilli sauce

Super night me Ade and lots of good folk

Feeling good after some major treats

International Women's Day

Hello and welcome back
First of all I would like to say a huge thank you to all my readers and welcome the new
readers also.

I have been very busy and attended an event in
Hull on Saturday to mark
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
Here in Hull there was a celebration on the Saturday in Hull's central library.
I attended the panel discussion at mid day
(below is one of the posters for the event)
Here is a little about the venue
Firstly though I went to view some of the art on show in the cafe.
Here are a few
This created by my good friend
Debi Keable of her late nana.
A touching tribute may I add.
In Hulls library cafe quite a lovely space actually.

These by Lucy-Anna Howson

Then this by Rebecca Robyns.

So then onto the panel talk
Held in the main library

Debi talked about her work presented in Guild hall
A collection of rose petals from friends and family. The flowers was gifts from the loss of her nana.Debi put them all together to create the work.
Knowing Debi I know this meant an awful lot to her and the audience really related to Debi and her emotions.
If you wish to know more about
Debi Keable and her art see more here

The panel consisted of ladies who all had a very different life/story and events to tell the audience.
This lady is Kay Duran
Hulls Detective Chief Inspector
Who has quite the history
serving the Royal army corps and working as a police woman for twenty three years.
Working in the sector of vulnerable people and children who are sexually exploited.
Her role in the force and personal life must have been quite a challenge given it's a very male lead profession.

Uma Rajesh who is new to Hull working
at Hulls hospital as an obstetrician.
Mother to Welsh/Indian children descending from Chennai which was formally Madras.
Uma left her home country after marrying and being a midwife back home now focuses on
women in pregnancy with addiction during pregnancy.
Now to sister Teresa Matthews to lead a conversation also

Then to Margaret King
Who I had to say stole the whole talk.
Margaret wrote her first book at the tender age of
eight seven years old.
The quote
"A diary is a discipline of writing"
Writing the book Ada's Terrace find it here

Then a leading lady in Hull
Diana Johnson who was one of 26 women out of 40 people to be in in the biggest intake of women into Parliament at that time.
Highlighting her proud moments as Introducing the smoking ban and being proactive regarding modern slavery.
See more here
Or

Then the Lord Mayor of Hull
The Lord mayor is  very interesting lady.
Before Saturday I knew very little about her.
However I discovered that she left school with one Olevel and sat again and got 7 and was a nurse for seventeen and a half years and then got a degree in Social work.
See more here

The talk was a great meeting of ladies varied and some known and unknown to the audience.
I certainly was captivated by each and every life story told more so Margarets moment to talk.
Gentle humbling and delicate she made the us all wait a while till she realised she had not got her glasses on to read to us.
This was a true moment of delight as I thought maybe she had been caught up in emotion in fact that was just me being emotional.
She captivated us all with every word then her daughter began to talk and told us even more about her which was truly the highlight of the whole talk for me.Letting us know that us women are true heroes and revealing her love and admiration for her mum.Took as all back and it was wonderful!
I hope next years event is bigger and we have more room to debate and talk with more room more women.Till then we can still talk still grow and still learn as women we should stand together like our sisters before.

Here is a list of all the artist on show at the event

Your Ex Is Engaged on Facebook

So you emailed him, but it was casual and pertinent: "Hey, I found your Frisbee in the back of my closet. If you need it I can mail it or something. Hope you're doing well."
Yeah, that was pathetic. Now what are you doing? Refreshing your inbox? Waiting for his response? OK, I give up. You're on your own. Call me when you're ready to drink this off.
